10 grey-painted troopships, escorted by four warships, sailed to war. these ships carried around 8500 men and 4000 horses. This was the second major department of New Zealand for the troops of the First World War. In September, the four contingents were farewelled at civic events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Up to 30,000 people came to Wellington’s farewell to the soldiers.
Thanks to the arrival of the armoured cruiser HMS Minotaur and the Imperial Japanese Navy’s battlecruiser Ibuki, the convoy was finally ready to depart. On 14-15 October the troops and horses reboarded their ships, which anchored out in the harbour
